About our Troop
Troop 388 is part of the Boy Scouts of America, an organization dedicated
to teaching young men the skills they will need to be prepared for life's many challenges and to encouraging them to
remain physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
Chartered in 2004 to Greystone Baptist Church, Troop 388 instills the
principles of Scouting through high-adventure outdoor activities and achievement-centered skill building.
During the Summer Season (Feb - Oct), the Troop meets every Monday night,
except holidays, from 6:45pm to 8:15pm in the youth classroom of Greystone Baptist Church
(map). During the Winter Season (Nov - Jan), the Troop meets from
6:30pm to 8:00pm.
Troop 388 proudly supports the activities of its brother pack, Pack 33.
Leadership

Bill Fleming, Jr.
Scoutmaster
I am a third generation Raleigh Boy! Our family attended First Baptist
Church in Downtown Raleigh and as a youth, I became involved in the Boy Scout
Troop. The unit number was 388 and I consider my accomplishments and
experiences with the unit as some of the benchmarks in my life. While a scout,
I was selected to become a member of the Order of the Arrow of the Occoneechee
Lodge 104. I was fortunate to attend the 1977 National Boy Scout Jamboree and
I achieved Eagle Scout by age 15.

I served as a summer camp counselor at Camp Reeves and Camp Durant. I
remained as an active member of 388 until I left for college in Boone, NC in
1982. While attending ASU, I served as a merit badge counselor and a certified
CPR instructor. I was a cadet in the Army ROTC program and I trained over 180
cadets in CPR and First aid.
After graduating from ASU, I returned to Raleigh and began my career as a
photographer and opened my own studio. I also became Assistant District
Commissioner of the then Baden Powell District (which has now been split into
several districts). I served in this position until the birth of my son in
1994.
I re-entered scouting with the reorganizing of Troop 388 at Greystone
Baptist Church. I am an active member with Greystone along with my wife Laura
and our son Will. Will is involved in the Cub Scout program at Greystone. We
live in N.W. Raleigh. I have a photography and commercial printing studio with
an emphasis in graphic design.

Charlie Brown
Assistant Scoutmaster
Most folks would describe Charlie as a 'big guy', and they'd be right.
That size served him well in the more than 17 years of law enforcement
work he did before embarking on a career in photography in 1991. He grew
up with his parents and two younger brothers in Maryland, Alabama,
Virginia, and Texas as they followed government contracts for his Dad's
civilian aeronautical engineering work.

Even while on the move, Charlie made time to earn the Boy Scout rank of
Star and finished most of the requirements for Life. Those Scouting
experiences have fostered a life-long affection for hiking, canoeing,
camping, backpacking, hunting and shotgun sports. Charlie has backpacked
most of the Appalachian trail south of Harper's Ferry. Some of those
trail sections were so much fun he hiked them in both directions! He has
also enjoyed some backpacking adventures in the Sierra Nevada and San
Juan mountains in addition to a variety of North Carolina trails.
Those experiences, his Christian faith, and his heart felt allegiance to
the United States of America are the foundation of his enthusiasm for his
leadership role in Boy Scout Troop 388.
Charlie and his wife, Dee, have been happily married since 1982. They
have made their home in Clayton since moving there from Alabama in 1984.
Dee is a Critical Care Registered Nurse in the Cardiac Thoracic Surgical
Intensive Care Unit of Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. She earned her BSN
degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Bishop Bettini
Assistant Scoutmaster
Bishop entered Troop 254 in Greensboro, N.C. at the age of 11, and, just
after turning 13, had earned his Eagle Scout rank and was a member of
the Order of Arrow, Lodge 70 Tali Tak Taki. By 15, he had earned a
Silver Palm and was a Vigil member in the Order of the Arrow.

At 15, Bishop was accepted to the North Carolina School of
Science and Mathematics, whose demands required he suspend his
involvement with Boy Scouts. After graduating from NCSSM, the rigors
of collegiate academia, combined with a full-time job as a software
engineer, also precluded Bishop from continuing his Scouting
work.
Graduating from North Carolina State University, Bishop went on
to establish, and continues to maintain, a Raleigh-based software
development firm. Outside of business, Bishop pursues his hobbies
as pianist and dancer and his interests in social and environmental
activism.
Shifting to a more personal reflection...
Twelve years since leaving Troop 254, I have been able to return to
Scouting. But in all those years, Scouting never left me, and that
is exactly why I've come back to Scouting: to teach a new generation of
young men how to make the most of themselves through the principles of
Scouting.
