About our Troop
Troop 388 is part of the Boy Scouts of America, an organization dedicated to teaching young men the skills they will need to be prepared for life's many challenges and to encouraging them to remain physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
Chartered in 2004 to Greystone Baptist Church, Troop 388 instills the principles of Scouting through high-adventure outdoor activities and achievement-centered skill building.
During the Summer Season (Feb - Oct), the Troop meets every Monday night, except holidays, from 6:45pm to 8:15pm in the youth classroom of Greystone Baptist Church (map). During the Winter Season (Nov - Jan), the Troop meets from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.
Troop 388 proudly supports the activities of its brother pack, Pack 33.
Leadership
I am a third generation Raleigh Boy! Our family attended First Baptist Church in Downtown Raleigh and as a youth, I became involved in the Boy Scout Troop. The unit number was 388 and I consider my accomplishments and experiences with the unit as some of the benchmarks in my life. While a scout, I was selected to become a member of the Order of the Arrow of the Occoneechee Lodge 104. I was fortunate to attend the 1977 National Boy Scout Jamboree and I achieved Eagle Scout by age 15.
Charlie grew up with his parents and two younger brothers. He lived in Maryland, Alabama, Virginia, and Texas as they followed government contracts for his Dad's civilian aeronautical engineering work.
As a Scout, Charlie earned the rank of Star and finished most of the requirements for Life. Those Scouting experiences have fostered a life-long affection for hiking, canoeing, camping, backpacking, hunting and shotgun sports.
Charlie has backpacked most of the Appalachian trail south of Harper's Ferry. He has also enjoyed some backpacking adventures in the Sierra Nevada and San Juan mountains in addition to a variety of North Carolina trails.
I joined the Troop Leadership because of the great things I saw the Troop doing.
Between the camping, hiking and summer camps, how could I stay away! I also have the honor to have been accepted (selected) by the Occoneechee Council as the 2nd Assistant Scout Master in Scoutmaster Fleming's patrol (troop) for the 100th Anniversary National Jamboree coming in the summer of 2010.
Additionally, I spent almost 14 years on an international assignment in France, and I speak fluent French.
Finally, my other big job is as the CubMaster for our brother Cub Scout Pack, Pack 33.
Rick DeRose is a BSA-trained Assistant Scoutmaster and has completed Wood Badge training.
